Major General Martin Peterson is a recurring character who appears in Seasons 1-4 of I Dream of Jeannie, beginning with the Season 1 episode "Too Many Tonys". The part of General Schaeffer is played in the episodes by veteran TV/film actor Barton MacLane, before his death. He was replaced by Vinton Hayworth who played the incoming NASA and Edwards Air Force Base commander, General Winfield Schaeffer.

General Peterson thinks highly of his astronauts in the NASA Space Exploration Program, namely Majors Nelson and Healey, but at times, is prodded by Dr. Bellows to investigate the strange things that occur when Jeannie performs one of her spells on or in the circumstance of either one. Like Dr. Bellows, he is completely in the dark pertaining to Jeannie's identity and her powers as a genie, and always winds up putting down Bellows' cases against Tony.
